ESPA: Environmental Security for Poverty Alleviation
The aim of this programme is to create an array of practical decision tools, strategic maps and initial policy recommendations for decision makers in government, the private sector and NGOs on supporting people's livelihoods that depend on globally significant ecosystems.
Background
EnviroSecurity Assessments developed by the IES and partners, are meant to provide decision makers in government, the private sector and NGOs with an array of practical decision tools, strategic maps and initial policy recommendations for globally significant flash-point areas.
Initial assessments should lead to the development, finance and implementation of multi-year EnviroSecurity Action Plans that seek to enhance global environmental, economic and human security.
The ESPA programme builds upon the IES Prototype EnviroSecurity Assessments carried out in 2004-2005 which focused on Kalimantan in Indonesia, the Virunga-Bwindi region in Africa and the Mataven area in Colombia. In the new 2006-2010 programme we continued to work to ensure that the data for each of these case studies stayed up-to-date and that we followed through on the implementation of the recommendations from these studies. Work on three additional case studies began in 2007 with the EnviroSecurity Assessments on the DRC-Congo Basin, Horn of Africa and the Mekong River Basin published at the end of 2010.
In each case we identify the interdependency between conservation of eco-system services and poverty alleviation.
